This week you are asked to consider Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica. Give three reasons why you do or do not believe this painting has been a successful form of public political protest. You may consider questions like “Would I even call this a protest? What was its original purpose? What has it achieved over the years? What could be a more successful form of protest? Does the painting speak to me emotionally? Does it address issues of violence and/or justice? How do Picasso’s painting style and formal decisions (eg: limiting his color palette) contribute to or detract from the painting’s impact?”

You are not being asked to answer all these questions but to consider them in order to help you form your own opinions. You may also choose to further research the painting and its history.
